Regular exercise is one of the best things we can do for our health, but staying motivated and turning it into a life-long habit is often challenging for most of us. Research has shown that group fitness or having a workout buddy can help you stay on track. Let’s explore the benefits we can experience when we exercise with others.

More Than Exercise

A workout buddy brings more than just motivation for activity. A research study highlighted by the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine1 found that “participation in regular group fitness classes led to a statistically significant decrease in perceived stress and an increase in physical, mental, and emotional QOL (quality of life) compared with exercising regularly on one’s own or not engaging in regular exercise.” Exercising with others fosters conversation, encouragement, and teamwork toward a common goal, which can help build and strengthen relationships.

Boost Your Commitment

Exercising with others can help renew your commitment to regular activity. It is always harder to break plans or skip classes when others are counting on us to be there. Unfortunately, we can easily talk ourselves out of fitness plans, but we tend to feel more obligated to follow through when we know other people are involved. A workout buddy can inspire us to keep going when times get tough. We can also provide the same encouragement to them whenever they need it, which brings even more purpose to our routines.

Work Harder

Whenever we exercise alone, it can be easy to give less than 100% effort or quickly throw in the towel. We can get bored, tired, or sidetracked. However, working out in a group or with others can bring out a competitive nature in us. While it is still important to listen to your body and not push beyond your limits, performing at your best can help you stay the course and reach your goals.

Save Money

Exercising with others can be cost-effective, too! Typically, workout classes or personal training are less expensive in a group setting. Many trainers and gyms offer discounted rates when you bring a friend or share the training session. If you are exercising at home with a friend, family member, or roommate, consider sharing the cost of equipment as an affordable alternative.

Safety First

Your workout buddy can bring an element of safety to your workout that you would not necessarily have alone. They can keep an eye on your form, assist with spotting and lifting, and quickly get help should you ever need it. If you are exercising alone, practice safe habits by bringing your phone and telling someone where you will be and when you expect to return home.

Virtual Workout Buddies Help Too!

Timing, schedules, and physical location can make it challenging to exercise in person with others. However, virtual workout buddies can also be a benefit to our efforts! Joining an online class offers similar advantages to an in-person class, plus the added flexibility and convenience of being home. You can catch up with friends or family members on the phone while going on a long walk. Your virtual workout buddy can still boost accountability by having someone to report to, even if they are not right there with you. Having someone who brings encouragement, inspiration, and excitement to your routine can help build your habit, whether they are with you in person or virtually.

Always consult with your physician before starting a new exercise program.
