Most of us are familiar with the importance of brushing our teeth regularly and maintaining good oral hygiene. However, oral health goes beyond clean teeth and healthy gums. Caring for our mouths has a direct impact on our overall well-being. Let’s explore how proper dental care can benefit our physical and mental health.

Prevent and Manage Diseases and Conditions

The mouth is full of germs and bacteria. While they are largely harmless, some dangerous germs can enter the digestive tract and bloodstream. Research has found that this increase in germs and inflammation can raise the risk of various diseases and conditions such as heart disease, endocarditis, pneumonia, diabetes, and cancer (Mayo Clinic1). Additionally, studies have found a possible link between bacteria associated with gum disease and Alzheimer’s disease (University of Illinois Chicago2). Maintaining proper oral hygiene can help control these germs and inflammation.

Promote Healthy Nutrition

Poor oral hygiene contributes to tooth decay, gum disease, and damaged taste buds. These factors greatly affect what, how much, and how often we eat. They create interruptions in healthy eating patterns, making it difficult to maintain a healthy and nutrient-dense diet. Just as our dental hygiene can impact our food choices, the opposite is also true. Excessive quantities of sugary or acidic foods and beverages can damage enamel and increase the risk of decay.

Improve Mental Health

Our teeth, smile, and overall oral health play a significant role in how we view ourselves as individuals. It affects our mood, emotions, and interactions with others. We often find that it influences our personal and professional confidence. The correlation of oral health to mental health begins at an early age. In fact, studies found “children with untreated tooth decay miss more school days and receive lower grades than others who receive regular dental care” (Penn Dental Medicine3). Early dental hygiene habits can set a foundation for stronger mental health for years to come.

Oral Hygiene Practices

To maintain proper oral hygiene, dentists recommend the following habits. Brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day to clean those harder-to-reach areas. Have regular exams with your dentist that include cleaning and x-ray screenings. Do not smoke or use tobacco products. Follow up with your doctor or dentist about any medical concerns right away. Finally, continue practicing good overall health habits such as proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and regular physical activity.
