Summer is just around the corner, and what better way to get moving than including the whole family in fun outdoor activities? We often give up on our exercise routine because it gets boring, or we feel guilty for time spent away from our families. Outdoor activities can turn exercise into enjoyable and motivating movement. Grab your loved ones and find an activity that everyone can look forward to.

Try These Outdoor Ideas

Plant and tend to a garden. Teach the skills of digging, planting, weeding, and watering as you incorporate the activity of gardening with your family. It can even bring an interest in adding more fruit and vegetables to your meals. Caring for a garden can bring continued movement all season long.

Go on a hike. Enjoy nature by going for a hike. Whether traveling to a scenic destination or visiting a local park, hiking can provide exciting exercise for the whole family. Keep younger children interested by turning your hike into an outdoor scavenger hunt.

Take a family bike ride. Ride around your neighborhood, or load up the bikes and explore a nearby trail. Biking is a good cardio exercise and can be low-impact fun for almost any age. Don’t forget helmets for everyone!

Play a round of disk golf. Disk golf is gaining popularity and fun for the whole family. Look for a course near you and bring a frisbee. If you can’t make it to a course, practice throwing the frisbee back and forth or set up targets in your yard to practice your aim.

Enjoy backyard sports. Whether passing a ball or playing a game of friendly competition, sports are impactful ways to incorporate movement, teamwork, and endurance. Try a quick game of soccer, basketball, football, baseball, or volleyball. Or consider something out of the ordinary like badminton, tug-of-war, or a relay race. Take turns letting each family member pick an activity so everyone gets a turn while trying new things.

Be An Example

One of the best ways to prioritize movement for the whole family this season is by being an example. Our children and family members take note of the things we deem important. They will see if exercise is a priority and if it can include fun and enjoyable activities. Including them in your exercise routines will not only help them build healthier habits for the future, but it will help you stay accountable, too!

Indoor Options for Rainy Days

Even in the summertime, the weather can quickly change our plans. Here are a few options for indoor exercise the whole family can enjoy.

Have a dance party. Crank up the music and bust a move. Take turns playing your favorite songs and see who has the best dances.

Play hide and seek. It might be an old playground game, but it has stood the test of time. Get creative and see who can find the best hiding spot.

Try an exercise game. Between exercise video games, fitness dice, or conditioning card games, the options for indoor exercise are becoming more exciting and numerous than ever before.

Whether playing indoors or outdoors, consider trying a new activity this season that the whole family can enjoy!

Always consult with your physician before starting a new exercise program.
