Don’t let the cold weather freeze your exercise routine. Chilly temperatures, snowy weather, and limited daylight can make it challenging to stay motivated. However, there are plenty of options to continue your exercise sessions indoors this season. Keep your habits going strong year-round with these fun and practical winter activities.

Utilize Free Apps and Videos

Home workouts are an easy and flexible option for winter exercise. However, if you’re unsure of what to do or have minimal space and equipment, they can feel intimidating or ineffective. Consider utilizing free resources such as apps and videos. Look for free apps with large databases of instructor-led workouts and a filter to customize your search. If you enjoy exercise videos, search for YouTube channels that are also instructor-led, class-style workouts. Keep your goals and interests in mind when searching so you can find resources in line with your preferences, such as seated workouts, yoga, interval training, and more.

Join a Gym that Fits Your Needs

If you have considered joining a gym, winter can be the perfect time. You will have a variety of indoor equipment at your fingertips. Before joining, ponder your specific workout goals and needs. Is location most important to you? Does it have a pool, sports courts, or other amenities that you are looking for? While treadmills and dumbbells are wonderful components of an indoor exercise routine, they are not your only option. Consider other indoor activities such as swimming laps or a pickup basketball game to keep your activity interesting all season.

Try a New Class

The winter season can force changes to your typical workout routine. Add variety by trying something new, such as an exercise class. From cycling to boot camp, Pilates to circuit training, and everything in between, you’re likely to find something that sparks your interest. You might find a new favorite that keeps you motivated to continue.

Wear an Activity Tracker

Sometimes, we need a little extra reminder or nudge to get moving in the winter months. Activity trackers can provide that encouragement. Whether monitoring steps, active minutes, or movements, they can bring motivating data to your fingertips. Make tracking fun by inviting friends, family, or coworkers to join in on a friendly step competition.

Grab a Workout Buddy

Even with an exciting workout planned, motivation can still be challenging to find in the cold, dreary, and dark months. Consider finding a workout buddy or joining an exercise group. They can help you stay accountable and encouraged on the days you feel like quitting. Even if you’re unable to work out together in person, you can still motivate each other with virtual workouts and regular check-in conversations. Year-round motivation can be tough, but having someone else to lean on can make it easier and more enjoyable.

Always consult with your physician before starting a new exercise program.
