With the holidays just around the corner, November is a great time to focus on routines that support your well-being. Meal preparation is a simple and effective way to make nutritious choices easier, save time throughout the week, and reduce the temptation to rely on fast food or less healthy food alternatives.
Meal prep does not have to require spending an entire Sunday cooking every meal for the week. With a little planning and preparation, you can make eating more convenient and enjoyable. Whether you are cooking for yourself or your entire family, a few simple strategies can make a big difference.
Make Mealtime Easier with Meal Prep
A little planning can go a long way when it comes to eating well! Having healthy meals and snacks ready to go makes it easier to avoid ultra-processed foods (UPFs)[i] – industrially formulated foods, such as packaged snack cakes, sugary cereals, and chips. These foods often contain additives, artificial flavors, and other highly processed ingredients. Diets high in ultra-processed foods have been associated with increased health risks.
Meal prep helps you save money, reduce food waste, and take stress out of busy days. Plan meals before shopping to avoid the daily “What’s for dinner?” question and ensure balanced meals with nutritious ingredients.
Plan Ahead for Success
Start by looking at your weekly schedule and deciding which meals you’ll need. Consider work schedules, appointments, family activities, and evenings when you may not have time to cook. Choose a variety of lean proteins, vegetables, whole grains, fruits, and healthy fats that can be mixed and matched throughout the week.
For example, grilled chicken, brown rice, and roasted vegetables can be used for dinner bowls, salads, or wraps.
Sample meal prep plan:
- Lunch: Grilled chicken, brown rice, and roasted vegetables.
- Dinner: Use the same ingredients to make a chicken bowl, salad, or wrap.
- Snacks: Fresh fruit, yogurt, or nuts.
Making your grocery list ahead of time helps you shop smarter, save money, and reduce food waste by buying only what you need for the week.
Top Meal Prep Tips
Here are some strategies that can make meal preparation easier and more sustainable:
- Keep It Simple and Mix It Up! Prep ingredients like chopped vegetables, cooked grains, and portioned proteins to make meals quicker and easier throughout the week. Keep things interesting by mixing and matching ingredients and trying different herbs, spices, and sauces for variety without the extra work.
- Store Meals Safely: Reusable containers help keep meals fresh, organized, and ready to grab. Label containers with dates and follow USDA Food Safety Guidelines for safe refrigeration and freezing.
- Plan Ahead for Healthy Snacks: Keep hunger at bay by prepping nutritious snacks like fresh fruit, veggies with hummus, yogurt, or nuts. Prep snacks in advance for a quick, healthy option at the first sign of hunger!
- Make the Most of Thanksgiving Leftovers: Promptly store leftovers in the refrigerator or freezer to ensure safety and reduce food waste. Keep the holiday goodness going by turning Thanksgiving leftovers into easy meals for the week! Add leftover turkey to wraps, salads, or soups. Pair leftover vegetables with whole grains for quick, nutritious sides.
Take Action!
Healthy eating doesn’t have to be perfect! Start small by planning a few meals, prepping ingredients ahead of time, and setting goals that fit your routine.
This November, set a goal to plan three meals each week, create a grocery list, and prep healthy options on Sundays—or whichever day works best for you. Small, achievable steps can save time, reduce stress, and make healthy choices easier to maintain!
Your future self will thank you!
