Stress can quickly accumulate each day, making it difficult to maintain positive thoughts and feelings. Practicing gratitude is a proven way to find calm amid tension and turn negativity into a more positive perspective. Choosing a gracious attitude can be a beneficial tool for managing stress. Consider the following tips to harness the power of gratitude and turn your stress into positivity.
Reflect
Press pause on the everyday hustle and bustle, and take a moment to reflect on the good things in your life. Even during the most challenging times, there is always something to be thankful for. Consider starting a gratitude journal where you write down people, accomplishments, memories, pets, or other objects you are grateful to have in your life. The things you reflect on could be large or small, complex or simplistic. Shifting our focus to the numerous blessings in our lives can quickly change our attitude as well. It keeps our thoughts from spiraling in a negative direction.
Savor
As we become busy or stressed, we often bypass the good things without taking time to savor them. It’s easy to move on to the next task or dwell on the next worry without fully appreciating victories and happy moments along the way. Savoring gratitude is about intentionally taking the time to focus on and cherish the people, things, and experiences for which we are thankful. Practice slowing down and sitting quietly as you relish in your blessings. Relaxing in nature or using your senses to center your thoughts can help cultivate deeper appreciation. Take in a sunset, notice the bold taste of a cup of coffee, or ponder a joyful memory. The act of savoring allows us to value the positives in our lives instead of taking them for granted.
Pass It On
Pass on your gratitude and practice extending your thankfulness to those around you. Internal gratitude does wonders for managing our stress and mental health. However, showing graciousness to others can magnify those results. Write a thank you note to a friend, surprise a family member with flowers, or spend quality time with a loved one. As we express our appreciation, we turn our focus away from ourselves. We start to zoom out and see the bigger picture rather than hyper-focusing on our challenges.
As we put the power of gratitude into practice, it doesn’t necessarily solve all our problems, but it does remind us to look beyond our daily stressors. Rather than dwelling on stress, we can redirect our attention to things that bring joy and positivity to our lives. Then, we can face challenges with a refreshed and favorable perspective.
