In today’s fast-paced world, our time and energy are often in constant demand. Protecting these and finding a balance can be challenging, but setting boundaries can help. Boundaries also help us avoid burnout, cultivate better relationships, and improve our mental health. Let’s explore six realistic ways to help build better boundaries.
Understand Your Limitations
While our ambitions and motivations can often start high, we are all human and have physical, mental, and emotional limitations. Understanding your personal limitations allows you to establish and follow through with boundaries that protect yourself and your relationships. Identify things that drain your energy the most or leave you feeling overwhelmed. What areas do you need help or collaboration in? Knowing your limits before diving into a situation, or intentionally taking time to recognize them, will help you establish a plan to avoid compromising yourself or feeling burnt out.
Communicate Clearly
Boundaries are often broken or disregarded due to miscommunication or misunderstanding. We tend to overlook the fact that others cannot read our mind and do not know our personal limitations. It is up to us to communicate our expectations and limitations clearly to others. This does not mean that we have to overexplain or justify them. However, stating them out loud helps others know where we stand and gives us the space to follow through on the boundaries we set for ourselves.
Be Consistent
It can be tempting to alter your boundaries ‘just this one time’ or because ‘this situation is different’. However, our limitations still exist regardless of the situation. The more consistent you are with your boundaries, the more others will learn to respect them. It will also help you avoid the necessity to backtrack should things become overwhelming or too much to handle.
Take Breaks
Schedule breaks into your day, even if they are only a couple of minutes long. It might be unrealistic to wait for a long period of rest or downtime. Intentionally taking a short break to breathe, stretch, and collect your thoughts will bring a mental and physical respite. Not only does it provide an opportunity to recharge, but it also allows you to check in with yourself, assess what you need, determine whether a different approach is necessary, and recognize when additional support may be needed. Breaks can even come in the form of a digital or social media pause. Try silencing notifications or turning off screens during mealtime or family time to encourage deeper connection and minimize distractions.
Reflect
Reflect on past situations to better understand where and what kind of boundaries could have helped so you can implement them in the future. As you establish boundaries, continue to reflect often to determine if and when you might need to adjust them. Adjusting boundaries does not necessarily mean loosening or disregarding them. Rather, it allows you to adapt them to fit your current needs. Daily schedules, demands, and seasons of life are constantly changing, and reflection allows you to choose or adjust boundaries accordingly.
Seek Support
Even with the best intentions, our plates can still get full, bringing us to the limit of what we can do alone. Part of setting boundaries and understanding our personal limitations is knowing when to seek help and support. It comes in many forms, such as learning to say no, delegating tasks, or seeking guidance from a therapist to develop healthier coping strategies. The right support can help you balance life’s demands while protecting your time and energy.
