What is Holistic Wellness?
Holistic or integrated wellness addresses the body as a whole, where each area works in harmony with the others. The American Institute of Health Care Professionals1 defines it as “an approach to health that considers the whole person, addressing physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual components of well-being.” Holistic approaches emphasize the integration of these areas, suggesting that they should be considered together when treating and maintaining health. It is not an alternative to traditional medicine that uses only natural remedies. Rather, it often combines and integrates conventional approaches with lifestyle changes, mental health care, alternative strategies, and education to maximize results and lasting change.
