Prioritizing and maintaining a lifestyle full of healthy habits can be a tall task when you’re trying to accomplish it alone. Whether you are at work or at home, having a support system of people who also value health and well-being can reinforce and strengthen your efforts. Being an example and building that support system doesn’t always happen overnight. The following habits and strategies can help you build a culture of wellness wherever you go.

Start Small

Starting with too many habits too fast, or setting too lofty a goal, can quickly overwhelm you and those around you. Start small and focus on one thing at a time. It will always be easier to build on the habits you’ve established than to start back at square one because your intentions have become too challenging to keep up with. As you build confidence with small goals, it tends to inspire that same motivation in others.

Invite Others to Join You

Invite your friends, family, and coworkers to join you in making healthy choices. Suggest a healthy potluck lunch, meet a friend for a hike, or start an after-dinner basketball game with the family. Keep the invitation open, but don’t push too hard. Remember that everyone moves at their own pace. Others will often find encouragement and genuine interest as they watch your journey with healthy habits over time.

Create a Healthy Environment

Create an environment that encourages healthy choices for everyone. This doesn’t mean you need to sound an alarm if a sweet treat enters the premises. However, keeping nutritious options readily available, allowing time for movement and activity, and encouraging limits on screen time can promote a health-conscious atmosphere. A setting that not only allows healthy behaviors to flourish but also reinforces them will bring mindfulness and awareness to our choices throughout the day.

Practice What You Preach

The best way to get others involved in healthy choices is to practice what you preach. We can talk about goals, intentions, and habits all day long, but our words hold little weight and motivation until they see the effort and fruit of our labor. We inspire others not by being perfect, but by showing them how much we value our health and wellness and that we are willing to prioritize it, adjust it, and work for it each day.

Remember Everyone is Different

As you create a culture of wellness at work, in your home, and wherever you go, remember that everyone is different. We all work at diverse paces, and we can often have unique priorities at different times. Just because your loved one didn’t sign up for the same race you did doesn’t mean they aren’t prioritizing health. Their current goal might be focused on better sleep or managing stress. Keep encouraging those around you and allow for individualized progress.

Be Consistent, Not Perfect

As mentioned above, healthy lifestyles are not built on perfect habits. Lasting progress requires consistency and persistence. The same is true for creating a wellness-minded community. No one is expected to hit the mark 100% of the time. Rather, showing up and continuing to support each other along the way will help keep health and wellness at the top of everyone’s priority list. A culture of wellness is made up of people who celebrate victories, encourage through the struggles, and support each effort along the way.
