As humans, we experience stress as a natural part of life. How we react, respond, and manage stress can greatly affect our physical, mental, and emotional health. Research from the American Psychological Association found that while loneliness can negatively influence health and wellness, “social support bolsters resilience in stressful situations.” Seeking out community and meaningful connections can positively impact our stress management efforts.

Ease the Fight or Flight Response
During stressful situations, our body’s natural reaction is to ‘fight or flight’. This can protect us from harm or prepare our bodies to fight in an emergency. However, when daily stressors continuously activate this system, it can begin to negatively impact our physical and mental health. Communicating and engaging with others helps us calm this action, so we can respond appropriately and thoughtfully rather than mindlessly or impulsively. The support of loved ones around us can help stop spiraling thoughts, reinforce realistic options, and give encouragement as we navigate difficult situations and seasons in life.

Relax the Nervous System
Stress triggers the release of hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. In times of emergency, this can be beneficial for increasing heart rate, circulation, breathing, and energy expenditure. Whenever stress persists, this response also persists, making it difficult for our nervous system to relax and return to a resting state. According to HelpGuide, “factors such as vocal tone, eye contact, and physical touch can all play a role in easing our nervous systems.” Positive, supportive interactions with others can trigger the release of calming hormones, helping the nervous system maintain balance.

Improve Mood and Emotions
Have you ever noticed your mood shift and lighten after a good conversation with a family member, a laugh with a coworker, or a cup of coffee with a friend? Social engagement can help alter our perspective and change our outlook on the day. Anxiety, loneliness, worry, and many other emotions can melt away and even be replaced with more positive feelings such as inspiration, joy, and contentment.

Lighten the Physical Load
Social support does not only come in the form of a listening ear, but it can also assist us physically in our time of need. All too often, stressful situations leave us feeling overwhelmed with full plates. Cultivating relationships with those around you builds a team of people who are ready and willing to help one another wherever they can. We all have moments when extra support is appreciated, whether that means a friend bringing dinner, helping with transportation, or taking care of household tasks during a busy season. Community steps up to assist whenever someone needs a lending hand.
