Many of us enjoy the sunshine when the sun shines brightly during the day. We enjoy the warmth, light, and motivation that it brings. Did you know the sun can positively affect your health and wellness, too? The right amount of sunshine can naturally lift our mood and energy levels while promoting restful sleep at night.

A Boost of Serotonin

Sunlight has been found to increase your body’s production of serotonin, a hormone responsible for improving mood (Cleveland Clinic). Many people call this hormone the “happy hormone” because of its natural ability to promote feelings of well-being while lowering symptoms of depression or anxiety. Conversely, a lack of sunlight can hinder serotonin production and negatively impact mood and mental health.

Your Source for Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that supports proper body function. It helps build and maintain strong bones, boosts your immune system, and allows your muscles and brain to work properly (Mayo Clinic). Sun exposure causes the skin to synthesize Vitamin D naturally. The amount of production is influenced by factors such as weather, the presence of UVB rays, clothing, sunscreen, and even skin pigment. Your Vitamin D levels can be measured by your doctor with a blood test to determine if you have an adequate amount or if there is a deficiency. Whenever a deficiency is present, your doctor can help you formulate an individualized approach to improve levels.

Setting Your Circadian Rhythm

Naturally, we sleep better when it is dark. However, experiencing sunlight during the daytime can actually prepare our bodies for more restful sleep that evening. It allows our internal clock, or circadian rhythm, to establish a more optimal sleep and wake cycle for the day. According to Stanford Lifestyle Medicine, “At any time of day, getting sunlight means that the artificial light to which you are exposed at night will have less of an impact.” Incorporating more natural light during the day can help you feel more rested and energized the next day.

Enjoying the Sun Safely

Natural sunlight offers numerous health benefits, but it is important to enjoy it safely by taking the proper precautions. Meet with your doctor and dermatologist to determine the appropriate amount and duration of sunlight recommended for you and your skin type. If you spend extended time outdoors, protect your skin with appropriate clothing and sunscreen. Whenever possible, choose outdoor activities during indirect sunlight hours before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.
